Also, today I went to the LABL fair in Liverpool, met some *awesome* people, tasted some *amazing* vegan foods, and had an intense discussion about the ethics of Pokemon battling…

I ended up in a vegan cafe/bar playing Cards Against Humanity with a group of people I’d never met before and having the second conversation of the day about Prince Albert piercings.

Freaking awesome day.

Dr. Henry Pavell – Head of Andropology and Synthetic Human Rights at the Unified University of the United Kingdom (UUUK).

History of Artificial Societal Lifeforms and the beginning of the Synthetic Human Rights Movement.

Good morning! I hope everyone was sensible over the weekend and didn’t overdo the festivities, I can see a few of you are looking a little bit worse for wear. Best get a coffee down you, we have a lot to cover in today’s lecture, and after the break, we’ll be going through the research task you were set last week.

Right, let’s get into it. As covered in the previous lecture, the early 22nd Century was a time of immense progress in the field of Synthetic Human Technology. As with the vast majority of major technological advancements, SHT was initially a military venture to create, for the want of a less cliché phrase, ‘the perfect solider.’ Different companies developed technologies in order to win the contract (which still holds the record as the most lucrative military project ever undertaken). Eventually the contract was won by the Pasung-Martin conglomerate, a joint East-West venture created to pool resources in order to meet the military’s exceptional requirements.

We previously studied Boeing Synthesystems’ designs and submission, which centred around a ‘production line’ style, totally artificial being – assembled and ‘grown’ in manufacturing plants in huge numbers, then sent into the field. Of course, as we saw, such a process resulted in defects during the process proving fatal in field-tests. A manufactured being – emerging as a fully capable adult synthetic human – would see any flaws during manufacturing then amplified due to a lack of an ability to adapt to their own physicality through natural growth. This, coupled with the huge investment in infrastructure needed to create manufacturing plants large enough to satisfy military demand, led to them losing out on the project.

Pasung-Martin’s submission was, at the time, a radical and revolutionary concept: Android-human genetic synthesis - the input of human genetic material, and allowing an artificial human be created around that basis. The theory was that such a process would allow artificial selection of the best-suited human phenotypes from the genetic material provided, and maintain a natural development cycle (growth), though accelerated to meet the demand of the project, while still giving ‘super human’ qualities through advanced synthetic skeletal and muscle systems which grew around a reading of this initial genetic material and android programming – giving the end product a unique physicality best suited to the role it was manufactured for, while also allowing the ability to adapt to that physicality. It also allowed for the circumvention of any taboo around ‘clones.’

What wasn’t anticipated was it’s effect on eugenics. Due to the nature of Pasung-Martin’s manufacturing process, human sexual DNA was required in order to synthesize with the artificial android materials in order for the growth of an artificial human. The initial drive was the collection of sex from top human soldiers, men and women, who had proven themselves in the field. Because of the artificial selection of optimal phenotypes from the human genetic source, the artificial humans created were noted as being “superior to all human soldiers both physically and mentally, as well as being incredibly physically attractive.” The former two traits being exactly what the military wanted, the latter being a surprising and unanticipated side-effect. The project was a resounding success, as proven by the way it shaped present-day society. It is the purpose of this lecture and essay to explore how the lasting effects project completely changed our our society.

carroboscis asked: i've been thinking about the use of porn in glitch art, and about how glitch art and porn share the same male producers and consumers. i read your earlier post on your use of porn and it seems like you've done a lot of thinking on it, and i'm wondering if you have more insight or could point me somewhere i could learn more about this

Answer:

stallio:

i’ve made work in the past that could be categorized as “glitch porn” and i still believe it’s possible to create good work combining glitchy/dirty processes with porn and erotic media. but because pornography is such a politically complicated issue, that makes it particularly difficult to work with successfully.

as you say, most artists who make glitch porn or similar work seem to be male. furthermore, most of their work appears to be created from appropriated porn — i have seen few examples of erotic glitch selfies, let alone hardcore glitch porn from scratch.

so the obvious questions that arise are: why are these men making glitch porn? what are they trying to say with their work? why do they choose to appropriate the specific images/media they’re appropriating? where did that porn come from, who were the performers, and were they treated well?

artists who don’t consider these questions run the risk of inadvertently creating work that is cheap, offensive, exploitative, or all of the above, and they may not even realize that other people are reading their work in this way.

personally, the work that i find most interesting is the work that takes something sexual and warps it into something alien and decidedly nonsexual. i’m less interested in work that is intended to be sexy or erotic — not because i don’t think it’s possible to create good work that is both “sexy” and “glitchy”, but because a lot of of it seems to be coming from dudes who haven’t given any more thought to their work other than “that makes me horny, so i’ll glitch it.”

i don’t have any such hangups about artists incorporating their own sexuality into their glitch work (or, for that matter, porn producers incorporating glitchiness into their porn!), but like i said, at this time, that seems fairly rare. maybe in a few years there will be an actual professional glitch porn company, and if there is, i’ll be happy to support them as long as they treat their performers well. i would definitely not support a terry richardson-style glitchpornographer who exploited his models.

PS i was in a panel discussion about this at GLI.TC/H 2112 but i don’t know if it was documented, and offhand i can’t think of any writings on the subject i could link to.
